Who What When Where Why How CAROUSEL BALL got its start at BJ's
Carousel Lounge in 1986 as a Colorado AIDS Project fundraising idea.
Oilman and former owner of 20th Century Fox Marvin Davis and his wife
Barbara hosted many celebrity-studded charity affairs in Denver during
the 1980's. The Davises hosted their Carousel Ball in support of the
Children’s Diabetes Foundation, and it became at the time the
largest single-event fundraiser in the country, a signature event in
Denver with the rich and famous of stage, screen and television hobnobbing
with the media and the locals ... all to raise lots of money. So, BJ's owner Bob Engel and a group of BJ's staff and patrons championed the idea of a "Poor Man's" version of the Davises galas to benefit Colorado Aids Project (CAP). Those individuals and many local entertainers joined forces and presented their version of what a sparkly charity event should look like. From that first night on, BJ's' Carousel Ball was a must-see. It has become an important moneymaker that continues to financially and emotionally support CAP and CAP clients, and remembers our friends and loved ones. Denver has seen Carousel Ball grow from a fun, back-patio spoof to a beacon of hope and goodwill that really makes a difference in the lives of many, with the help of many. Over the years, Carousel Ball has relied on the talents
and time of organizations: CAP, ICRME, Tavern Guild, BJ's Prom Court
and Homecoming Court; individuals: live singers, fabulous artists and
even the very famous, like legend Elizabeth Taylor as well as businesses
within our community to present an annual ball that is more than just
another ball, more than just another fundraiser, more than just one
night. Through 2007, Carousel Ball has raised over $550,000. Service organizations, business leaders, entertainers and individuals, locally and across the country have worked to support "Carousel Ball" efforts to eradicate HIV/AIDS. And always, the most important participants are YOU THE PEOPLE, The Sponsors, The Contributors and The Audiences. It's your generosity that can help offer hope for finding a cure once and for all. |
